Samir Tivad Dear Rakesh we are heading for GST from July 2017 none could have changed duty structure in view of adopting GST I am not advocating BJP even if other parties had been in power they could not changed it
Manage
Ankush Mestry
Ankush Mestry Absolutely when GST is about to come within a quarter....whats logic in changing duty structure of Indirect taxes ? The same fact was mentioned in the budget speech....... if we see the duty structure of GST, it would reduce the overall indirect taxation and also eliminate cascading effects (tax on tax i.e. Sales tax levied on excise duty etc)

Ankush Mestry So dear, before any tag line n comment, do learn to see the circumstances impartially.... and very important do study the process of implementation.

Ankush Mestry Most unfortunately, its general practice to make comment based on the proposition that "who did" rather than "what n why did".... and many so called intellectuals are not exception to this.

Rakesh Patil Chidambaram said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley missed an opportunity at reviving the economy hit by demonetisation. “That (cutting indirect taxes) is a tried and tested and proven method of boosting economy. He could have easily cut between 4-8 per cent (tax) across the board. “It is only up to GST time and when GST comes, GST will take over. He had a window of about 8 months to cut indirect taxes. It would come into force from 1st of February and I don’t think GST is going to come before October 1. So, he had eight full months to give a boost to economy by cutting indirect taxes,” he said.

Asked if the finance minister should still cut indirect taxes now that the Budget has been presented, he said, “Yes, he should. Even now it is not too late.” Chidambaram said slashing indirect taxes would push consumption and in turn perk up production.

Ankush Mestry PC has got no authority to do so..... further one cant decide duty structure without looking into statistics and data...which came precisely clear only in January.

Rakesh Patil I remember Excise duty was reduced to 8% lowest those days as an attempt . I dont see any revision in the 12.5% slab over last 3 years

Ankush Mestry
Ankush Mestry 12.5% is fair rate much matching with the emerging countries......Its crucial to improve the grounds of business i.e. infrastructure i.e urban & rural road construction, power generation, railway lines, communication means etc. Businesses need infra rather than lower duty structure. On infra front the really good work is being done in all 3-4 major areas i.e. Road, Power, Railways.

Ankush Mestry
Ankush Mestry See the rationale, whats logic to interfere the indirect tax structure, which is going to be scrapped within 3 months? Because, if well implemented, GST would be the biggest Indirect Tax reform in India.
